Rent at Pace University

Rent at Pace University

Last night, I had the pleasure of seeing Rent as performed by the Sands College of Performing Arts at Pace University, and I was absolutely blown away. The cast and crew brought a fresh energy to Jonathan Larson’s iconic musical, with standout performances, excellent choreography, and thoughtful direction throughout.

Klara Keeley’s Maureen stole the show. With apologies to Idina Menzel, Keeley delivered the best portrayal of Maureen I’ve ever seen. Her rendition of Over the Moon was nothing short of perfection—equal parts hilarious, captivating, and powerful. It was the singular best performance of the number I could have ever imagined, leaving the audience spellbound.

Dyoisa Wiggins brought so much heart to Joanne, creating a character who was both enduring and dynamic. Their chemistry with Keeley in Take Me or Leave Me was electrifying, and their presence throughout the show grounded the emotional stakes beautifully. Additionally, Wiggins and Noah Sucato, who played Mark, were fantastic in Tango Maureen. Their playful timing and sharp movements made the scene both hilarious and memorable, showcasing their ability to command the stage together.

Watching Miriam Muriithi was phenomenal—the energy she brought to every role was palpable. As the production’s dance captain, she did a fabulous job ensuring that the choreography was sharp and vibrant throughout the show. Whether dancing, singing, or delivering smaller character moments, her commitment and vibrant stage presence elevated every scene she was part of. She’s an incredible performer who brought a special spark to this production.

Kudos to the entire cast for their outstanding performances. Each actor brought something unique to their role, creating a production that felt fresh, alive, and deeply moving. Whether in lead roles or as part of the ensemble, every cast member contributed to the vibrant storytelling and emotional depth of the show. The chemistry and energy on stage were electric, and it was clear how much work and passion went into every moment.

One of the greatest joys of this production was watching younger performers on the cusp of entering the industry, showcasing their incredible talent and potential. So many of the cast members delivered truly professional-level performances, reminding the audience just how exciting it is to witness the next generation of theater artists. This production captured not only the heart of Rent but also the bright future of these rising stars. I can’t wait to see where their careers take them.
